What does an editor want? - Reading and Discussion
at the FRANK O'CONNOR SHORT STORY FESTIVAL
Thursday 18th September
Nuala along with Jon Boilard and Vincent McDonnell will read a story, then discuss the experience of assessing manuscript submissions, talk about what they were looking for and how the editorial experience has shaped how they now view their own work.

Karlsruhe Book Festival
Ireland is the guest country at this year's Karlsruher Bucherschau in Karlsruhe, Germany, and Nuala will be reading on the 1st December at 8pm at the Meidinger Saal at the book festival, with fellow poets Ann Leahy and Matthew Sweeney.
Other Irish writers reading at this three week event include Mike McCormack, Máighréad Medbh and Celia de Fréine.

Look out for Nuala's Irish poem Tatú on the DART train in Dublin over the coming weeks, courtesy of her agent Jonathan Williams, and to coincide with the PN08 Festival.

STRONG AWARD SHORTLISTING
Tattoo ~ Tatú has been shortlisted for The Strong Award for Best First Poetry Collection. The award recognises first collections published in English or Irish, in Ireland, in 2007. It is presented in memory of the lives and work of Rupert and Eithne Strong.
Along with Nuala's book on the shortlist are Dave Lordan's The Boy in the Ring, Billy Ramsell's Complicated Pleasures, and fellow Arlen House author Nell Regan's Preparing for Spring.
Cork poet Louis de Paor is this year's judge and the award will be presented at the Strong Reading at 12pm, Sunday 6th of April, Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, as part of The Poetry Now Festival.

CALL FOR FICTION SUBMISSIONS FOR SOUTHWORD
Nuala is fiction editor of the Cork-based literary journal Southword this year and submissions are now open, until the end of March.
Submission Guidelines:

Send no more than two short stories, up to 3,000 words each, to Southword, The Munster Literature Centre, Tigh Litríochta, Frank O'Connor House, 84 Douglas Street, Cork, Ireland.

All manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced, on A4 paper.

Sign each page and enclose an SAE.

Nuala's review - first published in The Stinging Fly - of Sarah Salway's début fiction collection Leading the Dance, is in the current issue of The Short Review
Her comments in the review about the cover are now redundant as the publishers, Bluechrome, have wisely given Salway's book a great new look.

FRANK O’CONNOR AWARD WINNER 2007
|
Nuala Ní Chonchúir, along with fellow jury members Segun Afolabi, Rick Moody and chairperson Patrick Cotter, have chosen the collection of short stories No One Belongs Here More Than You, by American writer and film-maker Miranda July, as the winner of the 2007 Frank O'Connor Award. The prize of 35,000 Euro was presented to Miranda on Sunday the 23rd of September at a ceremony in Cork 's City Hall.

The launch of Nuala's first stand-alone, bilingual poetry collection Tattoo : Tatú will take place at 6.30pm on Monday the 17th of September in The Dublin Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen's Green West, Dublin 2.
Several Arlen House titles will be launched at the same event, including Nell Regan's first full collection.

POETRY READING IN BALLINASLOE
Nuala will read with Órfhlaith Foyle at the Ballinasloe River and Arts Festival - An tSuca Fiáin, on Tuesday the 10th of July at 7.30pm, in Ballinasloe Library, off Society Street.
Born in Africa to Irish parents, Órfhlaith Foyle's first novel Belios was published in 2005 by Lilliput Press to critical acclaim. Patrick McGrath called it "a dark, rough, funny novel about a dying genius". A collection of Órfhlaith's poetry and short stories, Revenge, was published in September 2005 by Arlen House. She is currently working on her second novel.

READING IN LIMERICK
Nuala will read at the Munster Literature Centre and the White House Poet's launch of Southword Literary Journal 12, at the White House Poetry Revival, Limerick, Wed 11th July 2007 at 9.00pm.
There will be a selection of readers from the issue including Aidan Murphy and James Harpur. Nuala will read from her story, published in the magazine, 'Juno Out of Yellow'.
This is the twelfth edition of the literary journal from the Munster Literature Centre; it's a biannual publication and it features both poetry and prose from a range of writers.
The Munster Literature Centre, Tigh Litriochta, is a resource centre established in 1993 to highlight, celebrate and promote all aspects of the literature of the Munster region of Ireland.

Jonathan Swift Award
Nuala won first prize in the inaugural Jonathan Swift Creative Writing Awards with her story 'Mademoiselle O'Murphy'. The awards ceremony took place on Thursday June 21st 2007 at Saggart Heritage Centre, Dublin. Second place went to Joan Power and third to Mae Leonard. Philip Quirke took the top prize in the poetry section. Congratulations to everyone who made the shortlists.

People's College Writing Competition 2007
Nuala was a runner up in this competition. The awards ceremony took place at 7pm on Thursday June 7th at the Teacher's Club, Parnell Square, Dublin.
There were nine stories on the final list, and the winner was Alyn Fenn from Cork ; second was Evelyn Walsh and third Geraldine Mills. An all female list of winners – well done girls!

Nuala was a runner up in the Original Prose Writing Competition, a writing competition run in conjunction with the 'Aidan Higgins at 80' Festival at Celbridge Abbey, Celbridge, Co Kildare on the 4th, 5th & 6th of May 2007.
Barty Begley won the top prize on the day. Congratulations to him.

The third Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award will be made in September 2007 at the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Festival in Cork, Ireland. The prize is for 35,000 euros (approx US$42,500). Eligible books are those by living authors, published for the first time, in English anywhere in the world, between September 2006 and August 2007 (selecteds, collecteds or books containing stories published in a previous volume of stories by the author will not be eligible). Translations are eligible. If a translation wins, the prize will be split evenly between translator and original author. Books must be entered by their publishers by March 31st 2007. In mid July a shortlist of four titles will be announced. Publishers will be contacted in early July and authors will have ten days to accept their position on the shortlist. Only authors who commit to attending the awards ceremony in Cork, Ireland in September 2007 will be deemed to have accepted a shortlist position. The Munster Literature Centre organisers of the prize will pay for hotel and economy travel expenses of shortlisted authors. Shortlisted authors will also be offered a fee of 500 euros if they agree to read at the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Festival.
